Immigration & Refugee Law

At GGFI, our lawyers take a collaborative approach to serving our clients. We work with our clients to develop the best short and long-term strategies to achieve their objectives. We strive to always maintain transparent and honest communication with our clients and pride ourselves in the thoroughness and quality of our work. Your immigration journey may last several months or several years. Whatever the case may be, we are happy to assist you every step of the way.

Our firm helps businesses of all sizes, from large corporations to self-employed individuals, meet their needs through immigration. Whether you are looking to hire a temporary foreign worker to fill a labour shortage, transfer employees temporarily to a Canadian branch, or start a new business venture in Canada, we are here to help. Our lawyers will assist you through every step of the application process and provide guidance and advice on how to handle government communications and negotiations. Whatever your business needs may be, GGFI is here to help.

Students and Visitors

If you, your spouse, or your children are planning to study or visit Canada, you may require a visa or permit to do so. Our lawyers can help you determine what, if any, potential issues you may face during the application process and how to best address them. Let us help you make your journey as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Foreign Workers

There are many avenues and pathways to obtaining a work permit in Canada. While many individuals intend to work in Canada temporarily before returning home, others may be seeking to gain Canadian work experience in support of a future application for permanent residence. The different immigration programs, policies, and eligibility requirements can quickly become overwhelming. Let us help you simplify the process using our expertise and experience. Whatever your objective is, we can help you identify the best strategy for achieving your end goal.

Family Reunification

One objective of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act is to reunify families who have been separated by life’s circumstances. At GGFI, we will work collaboratively with you to find the best pathway to reuniting you with your loved ones. Whether it is through the family sponsorship program or an alternative pathway, our lawyers work hard to find creative solutions to difficult situations.

The current parent and grandparent sponsorship program is only available to a select few Canadians each year. Although a new program is in the works, the government has yet to announce or implement any such measures. Our lawyers can assist you and your parents or grandparents in applying for super visas as an alternative or temporary solution to family reunification. While a normal visitor visa only allows visitors to remain in Canada for 6 months at a time, super visas enable eligible parents and grandparents to remain in Canada for up to five years. Super visas can also be valid for up to ten years.

Permanent Residence

Applying for permanent residence can be a long, confusing, and stressful process. There are several different programs and pathways that can lead to permanent residence. It can be difficult to determine where to start and what strategy to implement to ensure that you are on the right path. At GGFI, we thoroughly canvass all of our clients’ options and guide them in creating both short and long-term strategies to assist them on their journey towards permanent residence and eventual citizenship.

Citizenship Applications

Applying for citizenship is a momentous occasion and an achievement to be celebrated; however, it can also be a daunting, overwhelming, and scary process. At GGFI, our lawyers will guide you through the eligibility and application requirements. We will also guide you through all communications with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada and any other Canadian agencies or authorities following submission of your application. Our objective is to make this process as stress-free as possible so you can simply enjoy and celebrate becoming a Canadian.

Humanitarian and Compassionate Situations

We understand that despite your best efforts, your immigration journey may not always go the way you hoped. Our lawyers endeavour to create a safe and judgement-free environment for our clients. If you have lost your status or it has expired, if you are experiencing domestic or workplace violence, of if you simply feel at a loss as to how to remedy your immigration issues, let us help you explore your options. We will work with you to find a solution.

Refugees, Protected Persons, and Persons Facing Removal

Whether you are thinking about making a claim for refugee protection, are in the process of applying for refugee status, or have been refused protection and need help with the next steps, our lawyers are happy to help. We have represented clients before all levels of the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Federal Court. Our lawyers have experience working with clients from all over the world and have represented individuals and families with many different risk profiles including, but not limited to, religious-based persecution, political-based persecution, victims of cartel violence and organized crime, persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and family violence.

We are committed to creating a safe space for all our clients, including those from marginalized and oppressed communities. No matter what your story is, or where you are in the immigration process, our lawyers will fiercely represent you throughout every stage of the refugee or removal process.
